Tried dripping water off a house plant and this was the best of a bad bunch.

It was great to have a go with multiple flash set ups, softboxes and umbrella's.

I also got to show some people my new drop skills and here was a result which I kinda liked.

Feb 26th Day Moon-Night Moon 44/365

As promised, if the moon is out I will shoot it.

Almost full moon tonight but not quite, so was able to pull a little bit of detail out.

The moon was out when the sun was still up, hence the blue sky, then I shot it again a bit later.

Both of these are SOOC and were taken handheld!

I have had a headache for 3 days now and it is starting to get me down.

Very busy and a bit stressed at work and getting nighttime toothache, so someone suggested I may be grinding my teeth and that is causing the headache. The TMJ is very close to the atlas, so that may be causing the grief!

Hopefully get it sorted tomorrow!

I was reading an article online, looking for inspiration for my project.

One of the suggestions was to take a photo of a simple egg. So I thought I would give it a try tonight. Just using a lamp for lighting, I tried to take an interesting picture.

Going with the wife's advice that this is the best one. See my rejects and let me know what you think!

1/4 Moon Feb 19 2010 37/365

Beautiful moon tonight.

If I can shoot the moon, I have to! So if the moon is out in London Town, you can expect to see it on my 365 project!

Only took this picture at 9.45pm. Thanks to the wife for being such an accommdating model. She had a lamp shining in her face and my 18-105 vr with the screw on lenses shoved in her face!

Only desaturated the top layer and brought the colour through. No colour adjustment!

Total cop out today. Very busy and long day in the office. Racked up 12 hours today. No time to pull out the camera.

However, my wireless flash trigger arrived in the mail today, so at least I have something to play with on the weekend.

For those who need a tutorial on how to take a shot like this, turn the dial to auto and press the button. No thought or creativity required!

Will have to wait and see.

I know, this is a rubbish effort. You get the idea of what I was going for, but could not find a suitable back ground and my photoshop work is poor.

However, I am very tired today. Had a bad nights sleep last night and do not have the energy to any more work on this now.

So, sorry for the bad image, but I may revisit this in the future.

Milk Splash 31/365

Milk Splash 31/365

I had to give drop photography another whirl today. This time I decided to use milk instead of water!

A couple of things learnt:

1. Milk is far messier (did I spell that right?) than water
2. Food colouring is even more messy than milk.

3. Using just milk results in fairly boring images. Maybe a flash gel or coloured back grounds will make a difference.

4. I need to use a infra red flash trigger instead of the built in flash to trigger the remote speedgun. The straight on flash just causes noise!

5. An assistant is needed and timing is extremely difficult. The more I do this, the more in awe I am of those people that produce those amazing images!

I think this is the best of the bunch, but please have a look at my others and let me know what you think!

Strobist Info:

SB 600 set behind the drop pointing to the right and reflected of a white (now with blue and red spots) canvas.
Fired using the built in flash.

I guess that as long as you learn something from an experience, then it is worthwhile.

I know for next time that I will need a square rather than round jar. I think I should also invest in a remote trigger. Using the built in flash means I get a lighting from a front on angle and that ruins the shot.

I also need to work on my back grounds. I need to work out how to light them so that they come out bright white.

I think this is the best of the bunch. The wife disagrees, but I am going to go with this one.

I must say it was a lot easier than I thought! I did get quite a few usuable shots. I will post a few of them too.

So this was not the most impressive of drops / splashes, but I just like the look and feel of this one.

I did a bit of adjustment on Photoshop, increased saturation and used the unsharpen tool.

What do you think?

Strobist info:
SB 600 directed onto white paper behind the drops. Set up to the left. Fired with the built in flash on my d90

Hippo Rising day 27 alternative

So today I tried drop photography for the first time. I don't count the times I tried dropping stuff into milk and water. This was the full water drop set up.

This is definitely not one of the best shots, however, I think it looks like a hippo coming out the water. See the rest of my stream for the other shots I came up with.

This is actually really easy and the processing in photoshop was a doddle too. I must say, if I just tried this without watching the tut, it would not have worked, but having someone to give you guidance is definitely the way forward.

I am going to work on this a bit more and see if I can get some more interesting effects.

Not too bad for a first attempt! See below for my other attempts!
